Private Owner Wagons from the Ince Waggon & Ironworks Co.
Using archives and photographs that he helped rescue from being dumped, Tony Watts has written a fascinating story of Ince Waggon & Ironworks and the private owner wagons it built. This book describes the Company from its inception in 1883 until its absorption into a larger group in 1933, together with over 140 photographs and descriptions of the wagons built.
Unusually, the author has researched and recorded details of coal producers, merchants and users who utilised these wagons. He has also included a general account of how the UK coal trade was organised, and how its rise and fall affected companies such as Ince. His meticulous research has involved detailed study of the railways' private owner wagon registers that have survived.
This book breaks new ground in showing how and why private owner wagons were built and used for transporting vast amounts of coal around the UK railway system.
