NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY

Wagons lettered N S usually halfway up side. Tare in 3" block figs. e.g. 6.12.0 at left of solebar. Number usually only on cast plate. N.S.R is earlier style, spaced as printed, to left with know to right. BREAK 459 VAN or BREAK 2091 etc. at top of vehicle with tare midway along solebar.

LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY,

Wagons had initial letters L Y, circle/triangle symbols or both (occasionally). Number usually only on cast plate but sometimes on body in scroll style figures. Tare on solebar e.g. 9.18.1 in scroll figures, spacing very variable, sometimes preceded by very small 'Tare' wording. Brake vans have depot name, e.g. WIGAN, usually with GUARD above. Refrigerator etc., vans lettered in black - 6" block nos. on fish vans. Very large letters are for 30 ton bogie wagons.

FURNESS RAILWAY

Numbers on cast plates only. Tare at bottom right e.g. TARE 7-0-2 all in 3" block. Capacity sometimes bottom left e.g. LOAD 15 TONS. The word OIL on solebar above oil lubricated axleboxes.

MARYPORT & CARLISLE RAILWAY

Number just above bottom rail at left, 6
