The dimensions and colours of the lining on LNWR locos and on BR mixed traffic (lined-out black livery) locos were basically identical. Apart from splasher lining (red only on LNWR, red and grey on BR) most of the differences arose from variations of shape and dimensions of the locos concerned. Because of the greater standardisation involved, most of the special shapes provided are for LNWR, but many of these items are adaptable to BR use.


Cabside upper and lower panels are provided to suit most tender loco types. Splasher lining (red only) is in one piece for curved splashers but in several pieces to save space for long splashers (Claughton, George V etc.). Footplate angle lining is close spaced with the grey downwards. Coupling rod splasher cut-outs also have close spaced lining. Each boiler band carries a double red line Tender lining is in one panel on each side (made up from end pieces and straights). Footplate edge lining is close spaced as on the loco; Whale and Bowen-Cooke tender frames were lined along the bottom edge and around the cut-outs, again closed-spaced. Tank engine upper cabsides and footplates were lined as on tender locos. Side tanks and bunker sides were lined in panels like tender sides. Bunker backs were also lined.


Minor variations of style occurred between regions and between classes of locos, so consult photos whenever possible. Upper cabsides were normally unlined, but some cabs with uninterrupted flat sides (e.g. SR t9) were lined all round. Lower cabsides, bunker sides and tank sides each carried a panel of lining nominally 5 inches (1.7mm in 4mm scale) from the outer edge, with corners and curves to suit the outer shape. Reversed corners with red outside are provided for re-entrant angles. Larger reversed curves can be found among the LNWR shapes. Use close spaced lines for footplate edges if they are very narrow - on wider ones use lines of normal spacing. Standard splasher lining was grey and red round the outside with a horizontal line of red only just above the footplate, but sometimes both colours were continued all round the splasher. Ex-LMS tank locos mostly seem to have had no splasher lining at all. Each boiler band had a double red line. Tender sides were mostly lined in a rectangular panel as on the LNWR, though sometimes on flush-sided tenders the lining followed the shape of the tender top. Steps, tender frames and other items below the footplate were unlined.
