7mm scale Wagon Bodies

The Historical Model Railway Society (HMRS) is pleased to announce it is making available two limited edition 7mm gauge resin wagon bodies.

A number of early Private Owner Wagons were needed for the 7mm layout based at the HMRS Museum. No commercial products are available so rather than bulk scratch build, masters were made for resin casting. The masters for these models were produced by members of the HMRS who are also 7mm modellers and volunteers at the Museum & Study Centre. One of them has also been restoring full size examples - such as the Charles Roberts wagon pictured below - for many years.

A limited quantity (80 of each body) have been made for general sale priced at £16 each (£14 to HMRS members). A limit of 3 wagons (of each type) per person has been imposed to ensure fair distribution.

This wagon is based on a photograph of Barber Walker Co, No 1004, pictured on page 176 of Keith Turton’s Private Owner Wagons book volume 5.

The wagon builder is unknown and no prototype drawing could be found. They would have been in main line use until 1910 after which they were not allowed on to the mainline. They lasted in internal use until the early 1930’s. Some were converted to sprung buffers and these would have lasted longer on the mainline.

Inspiration for this model came from the preserved wagon on display in the MRT’s ‘Kirtley Museum’ at Swanwick Junction although this wagon has detail differences from the model produced.

Details for the model were taken from Plate 30 of Private Owner Wagons, Vol 1, (revised 1988) by Bill Hudson. This wagon is in the livery of the ’Flockton Coal Co, Wakefield’. They were built from 1888 until at least 1910. Suitable modelling period: 1888 until early BR.
